Singer-songwriter and American Idol seventh season winner David Cook will make his Broadway debut in the Tony winning musical Kinky Boots. According to Playbill, Cook will star in the role as Charlie Price, the son of a shoe factory owner who reluctantly takes over his father’s business beginning April 3 at the Al Hirschfield Theatre and will star for a limited engagement through May 5.
“I am so thrilled and honored that I am going to be part of this show and get to work with so many amazing people!” “I love the collaborative aspect of theater, the idea of being part of a creative team and working it out in front of an audience each night. I can’t wait to join this incredible cast in Kinky Boots including the very talented Wayne Brady and Kirstin Maldonado.” Cook said in a statement back in February.
The news of Cook’s Broadway debut comes a day out from the release of his new EP Chromance, the fruits of a PledgeMusic campaign.
Based on the 2005 film about a struggling English shoe factory owner who finds an unlikely savior and friend in a drag queen, Kinky Boots has been a hit since its Broadway debut in 2013. The production won several Tonys, including best musical and best original score for Cyndi Lauper, and has welcomed a string of high-profile rock and pop stars in the Charlie Price role, including Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and the current lead, Sister Sisters frontman Jake Shears.
