Academy Award winning actress Diane Keaton dead at 79

Famed for her roles in The Godfather, Father of The Bride, Murder Mystery and Annie Hall, legendary Academy-award wining actress Diane Keaton has died at age 79. According to ABC News, Keaton’s death was confirmed by Dori Rath, a producer who worked with her.

No other information about a cause of death was immediately available. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical call to Keaton’s Brentwood home at 8:08 a.m. local time on Saturday and took a patient to the hospital.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams in “The Godfather” films and her acclaimed collaborations with director Woody Allen, including “Play It Again, Sam,” “Sleeper” and “Annie Hall,” the latter of which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978. She studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.

Known for her offbeat humor and timeless fashion sense, she went on to star in a string of hits spanning generations, from “Baby Boom” and “Father of the Bride” to “The First Wives Club,” “Something’s Gotta Give” and the “Book Club” franchise.

Keaton’s most successful box office film of the decade was the 1996 comedy The First Wives Club. She starred with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler

Keaton was featured in several more acclaimed movies in the aughts – including the 2003 rom-com “Something’s Gotta Give” opposite Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves, in which she scored her fourth lead actor Academy Award nod – as well as “The Family Stone” in 2005. Keaton was also an accomplished producer and director. She helmed the acclaimed 1995 drama “Unstrung Heroes” starring Andie MacDowell, as well as “Hanging Up” in 2000. Her producing credits span over 30 years, with the most recent being an executive producer credit on 2023’s “Maybe I Do,” which starred Keaton, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Emma Roberts.

Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter, and son Duke. She adopted them both in her 50s.
