An open casting call has gone out seeking men and women to work as paid extras in the upcoming Netflix biopic feature film Rustin. The story follows civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, who fought for gay rights and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, among many accomplishments. The movie will directed by George C. Wolfe, whose work on “Ma Rainey” helped it garner multiple Academy Award nominations and two wins. Higher Ground Productions, which was founded by The Obamas in 2018, is set to produce along with Bruce Cohen.
According to Trib-LIVE, the feature will begin filming the end of this month in the Pittsburgh area and will shoot a few scenes in Washington D.C. Filming will end around December 2021. The casting director is seeking men and women to work as paid extras in various scenes that will be recreated such as Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington.

Because of the period setting, they are seeking background actors with the ability to have 1960s-era hair and no visible tattoos — neck and face tattoos are out, arm and leg tattoos may be workable. The March on Washington took place in August, so most extras will need to be in short sleeve shirts but those with arm tattoos may be considered for scenes that take place in other seasons where costumes can cover the tattoos.
Anyone who wishes to be considered should send their name, age, height, weight, phone number and three photos of themselves (no sunglasses, must be well-lit photos) to rustin-pittsburgh@RoseLockeCasting.com with “Civil Rights” in the email subject line.
