An open casting call has gone out seeking talent to work on the upcoming independent romance drama Queen and Slim. Written by Lena Waithe, Queen and Slim is an exploration of America’s social and political climate through the lens of a genre-defying love story. The film will star Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther, Widows) and Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship, Nightflyers) and centers on a black man and black woman who go on a first date that goes awry after the two are pulled over by a police officer at a traffic stop. They kill the police officer in self-defense and rather than turn themselves in, they go on the run. Waithe is producing the film through her company, Hillman Grad Productions, along with Matsoukas’ production company De La Revolución Films and Frey’s 3BlackDot. Andrew Coles and Michelle Knudsen are also producing. Melina Matsoukas (Insecure) will direct. Universal Pictures will distribute.
Filming will be taking place in and around the New Orleans, Louisiana area beginning January 28th through March 22nd. An open casting call has gone out seeking men and women to work on the film as paid background extras, stand-ins, photo doubles and possible featured roles starting with the following:
- Protestors – Seeking Men & Men, Ages 18+, any ethnicity to portray law enforcement types, protestors, bystanders, etc. Kids are also needed.
- Mississippi Delta Juke Joint Types – Seeking African-American rural, townspeople types, Ages 20 thru 70 who are passionate about having a good time and love to dance. They are also seeking African American musicians for this scene.
- Uncle Earl’s Place – Seeking beautiful African-American women, Ages 20+ who are comfortable portraying exotic dancers, Should feel comfortable wearing provocative clothing.
