The Lion King has already been turned into a Tony-winning Broadway musical, that continues to draw crowds. The 1994 version was one of the studio’s most successful films, earning $968.8 million globally. The story centers on a young lion whose father and the king of his pride, is killed by his villainous uncle, who than usurps his throne. Disney will presumably keep the catchy music from the original film, with Tim Rice and Elton John songs such as “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” making an appearance.

On September 28, 2016, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed that Jon Favreau would be directing a fast-tracked live-action remake of the 1994 animated film which would feature the songs from the 1994 film, following a string of recent box office successes on the other Disney live-action fantasy films such as Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and The Beast with the latter three also earning critical praise.  Later on,  it was reported that Disney had hired Jeff Nathanson to write the screenplay for the remake.

Favreau tweeted a photo of Glover with the message I just cant wait to be king. #Simba.  The film is being fast-tracked, with the studio recently dating it for July 19, 2019.
