As filming is set to get underway this week on the upcoming Sony Pictures reboot of the 1972 blaxploitation action feature, Superfly.  A few familiar faces have signed on to star in the ‘Superfly’ flick, first confirmed are American Crime and Grown-ish star Trevor Jackson in the lead role as Youngblood Priest. Set to join him are Jason Mitchell  (Straight Outta Compton, The Chi), Rapper Future, Andrea Londo, Jacob Ming-Trent and Lex Scott Davis.  Trevor Jackson is known for his work in the TV series Black-ish and the spinoff Grown-ish. He’s also been seen in American Crimes and Burning Sands. Jason Mitchell is known for his work in Mudbound, which is generating Oscar buzz, as well as Straight Outta Compton.  According to, rapper Future has some big shoes to follow, as he will curate the soundtrack, following in the footsteps of legendary songwriter and musician Curtis Mayfield, who composed the original soundtrack. Curtis Mayfield and members of The Curtis Mayfield Experience also appeared in the original film as themselves. Mayfield was responsible for the music in the film and the soundtrack outsold the box office take.

The film is inspired by the 1972 classic, which starred Ron O’Neal as Priest, a cocaine dealer looking to score one more super deal and retire. The original movie was directed by Gordon Parks Jr., the son of Gordon Parks, who directed another blaxploitation classic “Shaft” — one of the staples in the early years of the genre that took the ’70s by storm.

The new Superfly movie (one word, not two words this time) has Watchmen writer Alex Tse on script duty. Director X is helming the new movie. Super Fly was directed by Gordon Parks Jr. (His father, Gordon Parks, directed the classic Shaft, which has a new film version in progress with Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree, Alexandra Shipp and Jesse T. Usher.
