After an extensive national talent search the producers for the upcoming Broadway revival, Once On This Island, have announced that 18-year-old actress Hailey Kilgore will make her Broadway debut in the starring lead role. The 18 year old actress, from Happy Valley, Oregon and a student at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy prior to her casting, will star in the lead role as Ti Moune. The musical, which was first produced on Broadway in 1990, follows peasant girl Ti Moune and her star-crossed romance with a young man from the wealthy side of her island, a world ruled by four island gods. The role was originated on Broadway by LaChanze, who earned a 1990 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
The revival of the Lynn Ahrens-Stephen Flaherty musical will also star seasoned company Phillip Boyki (Tonton Julian), Merle Dandridge (Papa Ge), Quentin Earl Darrington (Agwe), Alysha Deslorieux (Andrea), David Jennings (Armand), Kenita R. Miller (Mama Euralie), Alex Newell (Asaka), Isaac Powell (Daniel), and Lea Salonga (Erzulie).
The new production will be directed by Tony nominee Arden and choreographed by Camille A. Brown. Orchestrator Michael Starobin and vocal arranger AnnMarie Milazzo have created new arrangements with non-traditional instruments and found objects for this new take on the story.
Once on This Island will begin previews on November 9 in advance of a December 3 opening night at the Circle in the Square Theatre located in midtown Manhattan at 235 West 50th Street in the Paramount Plaza building.
