‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ Casting Call

Production is set to begin shortly on the upcoming film adaptation If Beale Street Could Talk based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel and 13th book about a love story set in Harlem in the early 1970s. Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) will direct for his Plan B Pictures company.  Annapurna Pictures will finance and produce the adaptation.  Moonlight director Jenkins has been working closely with the Baldwin estate to write the screenplay.  Newcomer KiKi Layne has landed the lead role along with FOX’s Shots Fired and Selma star, Stephan James. James also previously portrayed the historic Olympic athlete Jesse Owens in last year’s Focus biopic Race. Filming is scheduled to begin in October and will take place in the New York City area.

Grant Wilfley Casting has put out a casting call seeking the following to portray 1970s Harlem types to work on the film as paid featured extras.

  • NEIGHBORHOOD PEDESTRIANS – SAG/AFTRA and NON-UNION Male and Female African American/Latino ages 18+  with 60’s and 70’s cars needed to portray neighborhood pedestrians. Please include the make/model and year of your car in your email as well as a picture. Works multiple dates. Please change subject line to read “FB BEALE STREET CAR”
  • YOUNG AFRICAN-AMERICAN COUPLES – SAG-AFTRA/NONUNION needed to portray 1970’s young African American Couples age 20’s – 30’s. Works 10/16 in NYC with a fitting Thursday 10/5. Please make sure the email subject line to reads “FB BEALE STREET COUPLE”
  • AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEEN GIRLS – SAG-AFTRA and Non Union African American 14-17 year old girls needed to portray neighborhood kids playing Double Dutch in 1970s Harlem. Must be available for a fitting this Friday 10/6 or early next week, and for a shoot on Thursday 10/19 in NYC. Please put “FB DOUBLE DUTCH” in email subject line.
  • AFRICAN-AMERICAN TWIN or TRIPLET BABIES – Seeking SAG-AFTRA/NONUNION Baby boys age 9 months-1 year old. Work date October 17th. Please include parent’s names in your email. Please make sure the email subject line reads “FB BABIES”
  • PUERTO RICAN/LATINO CLUB GOERS – SAG/AFTRA/NONUNION Men and Women 18+ needed to play 1970s Puerto Rican clubgoers/neighborhood types. Make sure the email subject line reads “FB PUERTO RICAN”
